此條目介紹的是生物學上“目”級別的魷魚。关于身体有一圈肉鳍的头足纲，请见「墨魚」。关于“總目”級別魷魚，亦是與墨魚的合稱，请见「烏賊」。
开眼鱿目[1][2]（學名：Oegopsida）又称鎗乌贼[3][4]，旧为亚目，是身体细长、呈长锥形，有十只觸腕、其中两只明显较长，肉鳍只集中在头部；开眼目另一个明显特征是在所有的觸手的吸盤上都帶有倒鉤刺，虽然小型鱿鱼的倒钩刺可能作為一種口感被人类食用，但是大型鱿鱼的却成为所有無脊椎動物門中最具有攻击性的触手。

大眼螢魷魚；夜晚出沒，會發出大量藍綠色螢光。
开眼鱿目和闭眼鱿目均属于十腕总目，和墨鱼目（即墨鱼）、八腕总目（即章鱼）一样都会噴墨、會變化顏色、嘴裡也像牠們一樣有鸚鵡嘴状的齿舌口器；开眼鱿目因为身体细长、呈流线型而非常适合游泳，但是快速移动时只能以喷射的方式直线后退，灵活性不如墨鱼、脑容量更是远低于章鱼，不过游泳速度却是头足纲内最快的，有些物種甚至可以「飛」出水面一小段距離[5]。

一般的海鱼要想捕猎魷魚并不容易，因为魷魚的墨汁還含有毒素，可以用來麻痺敵害。海豚是魷魚的天敵之一，海豚会绕过烟幕穷追魷魚。海豚只食用魷魚的头部，一只海豚能吞下成百只魷魚的头。抹香鲸也是其天敌之一。
